For those who lust after old hardware—the satisfying click of mechanical keyboards, the magnetic buzz and whirs of a CRT, the hot breath of a stranger standing right behind you in an empty house—then Stories Untold is a must. It features four episodes of sci-fi horror where your primary interactions are centered around a set of old hardware. In the first episode, you sit at a desk and play and old horror text adventure.
But soon, the reason you can see the room around you and how the text adventure relates to that becomes clear. Each subsequent level has its own twist or two on the setting and old electronics within, making for some of the most unique, eerie adventure gaming out there.
Life is Strange was one of the biggest surprises of the last few years—a Telltale style episodic game that stood alone, and a clever gimmick backed up by tremendous heart. Yet the drama really comes from her relationships, from the genuinely difficult choices to make, and the clunkily-written but still efficient coming of age story at its heart. Frictional responded with Soma, building on its horror heritage, but putting the scares into an endlessly more complex, beautiful, and somehow even more claustrophobic environment.
Unlike a lot of recent horror, it avoids an over-reliance on jump-scares and repeated gimmicks where possible, and soon reveals it has more to it than just scares. Her Story has now won enough awards for creator Sam Barlow to melt them all down and create some kind of towering super-award, and not without reason. Even so, digging through the tale by searching for keywords and clips and piecing together the order for yourself is as compelling as any detective fiction.
You have nothing. Just that. Something adventures do better than any other genre is the more thoughtful story, with no need to be broken up every five minutes to punch a demon or race a car. To the Moon is one of the best recent examples, focusing on regret and hope and lost memories in reverse in an anachronistic order. No zombies. No axe-wielding psychopaths. Just the story of a man, Henry, escaping his life by taking a job watching for fires in Wyoming, and the relationship he develops with his boss, Delilah.
The best games among these titles combine stunning visuals with compelling stories, often taking players on an immersive journey through uniquely designed worlds. These games were made to keep Switch users entertained, often making it impossible to put the portable console down. Developed and published by Freebird Games, To the Moon is among the most criminally underrated indie games for the Switch.
It has a fascinating premise centered around two doctors whose job is to give dying patients an entirely new life by altering their memories.
In the game, they encounter the puzzling case of Johnny, whose only wish is to go to the moon. Its immersive story is a treat for anyone who enjoys emotional narratives and tear-jerking endings. The platform-adventure follows the story of the white guardian spirit, Ori, who must venture through beautiful forests and dark caves to uncover his true destiny and save the land of Niwen. Will of the Wisps is an immersive experience in a well-crafted, surreal world full of mysterious creatures who each have a fascinating story to tell.
One run only lasts for about half an hour, but the game is designed to be replayable for players to learn from their mistakes and eventually commit the perfect crime. The short and sweet Switch game is full of puzzles and twists that are delightfully shocking for even the most seasoned players. Players need to be strategic to achieve the perfect playthrough and get away with murder. Florence is a slice of life indie adventure developed by Mountains. The game features Florence Yeoh, who is an average something going through her boring routines — commuting, working, scrolling on social media, and trying to get some sleep.
This all changes when she meets Krish, a cellist who eventually breaks this routine and changes Florence in the process. The moving love story of Florence and Krish unfolds over six chapters, each narrating different parts of their relationship. I look forward to what happens in next chapter!
Amazing game! Jun 20, By YoloSunshine. The graphics are nicely done which makes this game visually appealing. Plus, the voice actors are chosen perfectly! They truly complete this game. The puzzles and hidden objects gameplay are great as well as challenging enough but not impossible to solve. Characters are all nicely developed which enriches the story further. It should be noted that if you wish to play free, like I did, your energy points are limited, , which gives you around 10 minutes, give or take depending on how fast you find the objects or solve puzzles, of gameplay each day.
In the end I would recommend! By Mystery Lover! Where do I even start!? Unlike most of these types of games, everything you do actually makes sense, from what your doing to how your doing it. The other characters have a real part in the story. And the time period its set in really adds that extra touch!
Their are almost no adds, except to get some extra free energy, but that is literally it!! And I love that you play as a woman instead of a man. This game has never been boring for me! As for me personally, I like the energy system, it keeps you from going too far and too fast in the game.
Besides, what fun would a mystery be if you found out the murder real quickly. And for everyone who is working on this game, keep up the good work! Stay safe and healthy during the pandemic! Awesome Game Jul 29, By JMJS This game is amazing in every aspect. I truly love the setting and era the game is in. I find the main character, Claudia, is very persistent and intuitive which keeps me interested in her next case she encounters. The other characters in the story such as officer Luigi are very helpful and supportive in her solving each crimes.
You have to exit out the game not clearing the app and go back in for it to work or possibly freeze halfway through again. Otherwise I highly recommend this app and game to any or all interested in a journey through the Alps! Awesome and unique storyline Jul 1, By Cutiebug It gives you enough to play some and get a little of the story and then put it down to recharge. It also has a button to watch short videos for free energy and you can get a lot free doing that. I adore this app the way it is.
If you want to get a whole chapter in a sitting then expect to pay for it. If you want small pieces at a time and play through some of the puzzles then recharge you can do that for free. This app has never forced money from me to pass anything.
The developers are extremely generous and give you so much of an interesting story and puzzles along the way. One of the best mystery game I ever played, however May 28, By LexTheMenace. The storyline is well put together and graphics was the icing on the cake that tied everything together! You need certain amount of energy to progress in the game and by the time you get into it, the energy runs out which leads you to buying a whole lot of energy just to continue or you have to wait a whole day for your energy to fill up.
Imagine if…. Jul 18, By Dr. This game has amazing potential…but for what I can only conclude is the greed of the developers. Every action takes 5 energy, but the real kicker is your energy recharges as the insanely painfully slow rate of 1 every 8 minutes. On top of that, they also make some of the items in a hunt require an action - so you need to take an ax and chop the wood before you collect it.
Guess what, that action takes an additional 5 energy too. The developers, if they want more game play and better reviews need to rethink their recharge rate or cost per action. Look at something like Mystery Case Files, pay X for a game and play it. Much better use of time and energy. Great game, but Aug 27, By hiding from responsibility. Update, I had originally given this a three star rating just because of the rate of energy consumption and the miserly dispersement of energy when watching videos to renew the energy bank, I absolutely refuse to pay for energy.
I have now dropped it down to two stars because of the constant freezing of the game. First off, I agree with others that the graphics are awesome. If this game was for sale and at the right price with the option to purchase new chapters when they come out I would gladly purchase. But in its current setup, the absolutely worst part of this game is the rate of energy use. And your only options are to join this, sign up for that, pay an ungodly amount for minimal energy, or watch countless videos to get 20 measly energy points.
The second worst part is the game and the videos frequently freeze causing you to have to start the scene all over losing all you gained before the freeze. The developers really need to pay attention and fix this NOW!!!!! See All Community Reviews.
By hoque serajul. Murder in the Alps is a great game for people who love mystery, puzzles, and good storyline. The characters have good voice actors and good designs. Though, it takes a long time to fill up energy. It takes 8 minutes for 1 energy to refill. And by the time you get to energy, it only lasts about 10 minutes.
I recommend this game to patient people and people who love mystery. Jan 11, By Lisa Algoso. I had an issue to where app kept closing. Developers reached out This is a very good game. I have been playing from very beginning and when im done i just start all over again.
Again, thank you for fixing!!! I can not play anymore I click on to get passport on dead woman and app closes I get message that developers need to fix bug Jan 1, By Teresa Bessette.
I really enjoy this game. I've been playing for a while and I've made it through all available chapters, anxiously awaiting the lastest!
The graphics are beautiful, the game play is engaging, story line is great, I especially enjoy the hidden achievements. It's glitched on me a few times, but nothing severe enough to dock stars and progress is always restored. I've spent quite a bit on money keeping up energy to keep playing which is unfortunate, I wish energy was restored faster. Dec 20, By Samantha Burgos. I cannot stop playing, it's completely addictive, love the story, positively thrilling and I also enjoy the fully voiced characters, that's my go to games.
I'm absolutely obsessed with games like that, it makes it so much more exciting to play. Please make more games like this. However, can you please update and fix where each energy can load for 1 minute, because 8 is way to long. Plus the energy usage takes up 5 to 30 for every little thing, those really take the fun out of this game.
Disappointing Oct 14, By Suceq I agree with the others the game is actually great, nice graphics decent storyline, at least so far. But the energy depletion rate is outrageous as is the time it takes to get it back. I have only been playing the game for less than a week, and I have say I enjoy it very much, but I can barely play once a day and that it very frustrating.
I think energy needs needs to fill up much, much quicker or maybe cut down the amount used. Maybe only use energy just for the puzzles, so we can do more than one every day or two. I really hope they improve this because I would love to continue playing for a long time. Please improve this, the game is definitely worth it. I would even pay to play with energy refilled every two or three hours like most other games. Wonderful and compelling but… Dec 14, By spiderman The storylines are interesting and the graphics are very good, but it takes a ridiculous amount of energy to do something minor, like handing an object to another character.
Because every single thing uses up energy, you run out extremely quickly. The rate at which the energy is refilled is like molasses. My advice: download this game if you have unlimited funds because you will blow through it like wildfire or you have the patience and self-restraint of a saint. I hate to even say that because the game is really really fun and you can tell there was a lot of thought put into the plot and characters and graphics. Aug 17, By SierraEcho8. This game is awesome with regards to the content and detail and format the story follows - that portion would get 6 out of 5 stars from me if that were all I would be rating.
What causes only 2 stars is the usage of energy required The other games I have played with range from minute for their recovery rate.
Otherwise, this game shortly leads to being a waste of time since you can barely enjoy one segment of the storyline without being compelled to purchasing more energy just to finish up a games or dialogue Energy Demands are Ridiculous Jun 3, This game is amazing and beautiful.
I love that there are voice actors that take you throughout the story, but the way the game deducts your energy is ridiculous. When looking for hidden objects, just finding each object siphons off 5 energy points. And you only regenerate 1 energy point per every 8 minutes, for a maximum of points at a time. This game is beautiful and addicting, but the developers need to figure out a better method for how the energy is used.
Energy should be used for each game such as hidden item game or other mini-games and should not be deducted per item found! This is ridiculous. I would not mind watching ads or just paying a flat fee for the game. Please change this soon. Many other players feel the same. Similar to Murder in Alps: Hidden Mystery. Decipher clues, unravel mysteries, and solve puzzles in beautiful adventures! Literally the best games ever Jan 3, I have on-and-off played these games for years. The story plots to the puzzles are amazing.
You only get two keys per a certain amount of time but the puzzles sometimes are extremely challenging to the point where I have to come back and try again. I always look forward to the new games they create. Absolutely wonderful collection of games and I will keep playing as long as they continue to create!
I love this app!!! Nov 20, By Niloux3. I love escape games like this and normally have to pay out the wazzzzuuuu to play or remove ads for the sake of your sanity.
Awesome games, ignore the bratty reviewers Nov 18, By FashionistaLA These games are awesome. Innovative puzzles, immersive storylines, and beautiful graphics. To the people using iOS 10, it is crazy that you feel entitled enough to dole out bad reviews while using an operating system that is literally over five years old iOS 15 is out now lol.
The entitlement some people have is just mind boggling. Love the games, colorblind mode please Nov 15, By Jason I love these games. They're always challenging without feeling impossible, and I always have fun with them. I would like a colorblind mode though, perhaps letters in each color naming the color? There are some puzzles that rely on color to find the solution, and with my colorblindness I'm spending more time trying to figure out which color is which than how to solve the problems.
I still love the games and will keep playing them, and have told friends to do the same. Absolutely the best!!! Oct 24, By Cuscolover. I have played many of these escape games only to get a few levels before you have to pay to play the whole game and the cost was always a ridiculous amount.
They have multiple scenarios to choose from and every one has a great story or plot. On Some puzzles you have to really think outside the box and may take a while to solve.
I know I can only give 5 stars but if I could, I would definitely give Keep up the great work and I would love to see more games from these developers.
The best. Jul 29, By JackieBangBang. I only like escape room games. Though I have played and beat all of them, they have gotten a lot easier for me. My only complaint is that I wish they were longer and there needs to be way more games by this developer. I finished Psychic Squad last night and was very impressed especially since the protagonist has my name lol. The story was very interesting. I was explaining the story to my boyfriend and he was intrigued. Even mentioned how it would make an interesting movie.
I have been looking all over for other escape room games like this, and I have found a few decent ones, but AE definitely set the bar high. Just get it. Just make sure you download this one first because some of the stories in this one are available to download in the App Store. Loving this game Jul 5, By Chalain. The storylines have been fun. I like that I can watch ads to reduce the wait time on keys. One of, if not THE best puzzle games Jun 3, I usually never write reviews for any game on the app store, but Haiku games are something else.
As someone who has binge played all of their games, they are SO worth it. The puzzles are all fun and challenging, while still feeling doable. Normally I am not a fan of wait-to-play type of apps, however all of the chapters are long enough to feel worthwhile. I just wanna say thank you for the work you put in, and thanks for making some great games.
Hope to see some more great content in the future! By 50ph The mini puzzles require a variety of skills and observations, the characters are realistic, and the storylines are engaging and complex enough to be fun. I decided to purchase some extra stars just to send some money to the development team because they deserve it, but the in-game stars are plentiful enough to cover the nearly-impossible puzzles you might need to skip.
If I could, I would rate them higher than five stars, I have gotten so much enjoyment out of the games. They are even surprisingly replayable! Need more NOW!!!!! Apr 24, By niqchu. These are seriously great games. Very thought-out and entertaining. Trapmaker is definitely my favorite, part 3 was the best!! I can't wait for more. Maybe a Carnival part 2 or more Trapmaker!! I liked the new one Covent but the ending was very abrupt. I finished disappointed and wanting more. I wish you guys didn't advertise Psychic Squad.
I feel like we've been waiting forever for it. I've already played all the classic games so adding them to this app isn't a treat. I know you're a small company but waiting is hard.
Jun 29, By LaurieAnn I downloaded this game because of the reviews given. The levels listed as beginner are still crazy hard to figure out without buying clues.
You are left wondering what to do. Clicking on anything and everything to figure it out. Some things if you sit and think about it are easy, but most things until explained in a clue you are left dumb founded and stuck. You have to BUY the stars. You are only awarded stars when you complete a level or find a hidden one.
But because too many times in a chapter you are left… what now you cannot continue. As a beginner you should have a few entry level games that gives you plenty of clues until you figure out how you, the developers are thinking. And can move on to less clues. Your explanations are pitiful. I would be satisfied with at least having to watch a video to get stars.
You can do that with keys but not stars. And stars are what you need to get clues. The graphics are great, but not worth any money. Before you know it you will have spent and nothing to show for it.
By Jamcat But the current system of making money is absurd. And then add in the fact that it costs even more to buy keys and remove ads. Um, no thanks.
Honestly, I love these games. Playing the most recent game though was very frustrating. Most puzzles that you get stuck on require 30 stars to skip it. Lower the prices of stars or bring back the stars you get when you complete a puzzle. By Shannen Osberry. Not a good deal at all. At least put 4 or 5 stars so that we can keep playing. Worst ever. Aug 22, By Crankynerd. My friend and I have been enjoying playing many of these games, especially the advanced level ones which we play together because of the difficulty.
And then we got to Haunted Hunt. I have never played a more inane and absurd game in all my life, and that includes the games I played with my children when they were toddlers. At first, being able to switch between human and animal was interesting. It made sense, for example, that the attic space above the seance room was too small for me to fit in as a human. But then I was able to not only lift the metal gauntlets—made for a grown man—but also take them into the same tiny attic space and put them on my wings in order to scoop up the silver musket ball.
As we played on, the puzzles got more and more random and nonsensical. Trying to figure out from the map the codes for the traps was absolutely incomprehensible madness. There was no skill involved, no way to figure out the meaning behind the acceptable answers. I did give it one star, however, because it was kind of fun to drink three glasses of wine and then dive into the insanity pool that this game is.
And one more thing, where the heck was Joan?? Jan 7, By Urtinyfriend.
