After downloading updates, Windows 10 automatically picks a time to restart your computer for you, based on when you tend to not use it e. Instead, choose a more convenient day and time for the reboot so the update gets installed and your work doesn't get cut off.
Here's how to tell Windows you want to choose the restart time for Windows Updates:. Navigate to the Setings menu. You can get there by selecting Settings from the Start menu. Change the dropdown from Automatic recommended to "Notify to schedule restart". Windows will now tell you when an automatic update requires a restart and ask you when you want to schedule the restart. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback.
While I do not mind Windows Update automatically updating my PC, hacing it force a reboot when I am logged in is causing a problem. I currently have WU set to perform the updates at 3am, and when it finished, if there needs to be a reboot, I am not there to tell it to wait.
I would prefer to leave the time settings as they are, and simply disable the automatic reboot, instead opting for WU to let me know it needs to reboot the PC. Windows Update's automatic reboot can be one of the most annoying "features" in Microsoft operating systems. While it's a bit less pushy with Windows Vista and 7, allowing users to postpone the restart for up to four hours, you may not be at the computer to intercept the first or subsequent notifications.
In many cases this isn't a major deal. However, it can be frustrating if you step away from a work session and come back to a freshly rebooted system. You might also be downloading a large file or letting a lengthy operation run while away from your PC, expecting it to be finished upon return. Fortunately there are various workarounds available. Today we will mention a few that have been tested to work in XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems. The methods below will disable the nagging reminders after Windows Update runs by stopping the associated service.
They are only temporary solutions because Windows will automatically start the service again when you reboot, which means you might be faced with the same problem the next time Windows updates are installed. In other words, this is your one-time off solution.
